Passionate lovers of wild bird song sometimes resort to harsh methods to satisfy their desire. For the difficult birds, the wilder, the most untamed ones, they apply the process of “boxing” (sendoukiasma). The bird usually considered most suitable for “boxing” is the European Greenfinch (Carduelis phloris). They lock it for a long period of time inside a chest in absolute darkness, in isolation. There, the bird—if it manages to survive such a shock—changes its plumage, is transformed, and becomes tame. It forgets its past and adapts to the new reality. It is tamed, disciplined, and subdued. It sings fearlessly, carefree, and passively reconciled completely with what its instinct taught it to fear: the deprivation of freedom.

With a quick glance, one can easily establish that this method is also applied to humans, either involuntarily or voluntarily, by society. Many “boxed” people circulate among us; without shame or guilt, and often even with pride, they sing what their jailers have taught them. They even reach the point of loving it and completely identifying with it.
